Applied Window Films

high performance films for glass

Where internal access is limited, externally-applied films can be used, as with this solar control window film application at East Midlands Airport.

Reduced heat gain and solar glare were the results of this solar control film installation at Mansells in Stourbridge.

Solar control film reflects solar heat and glare while letting visible light pass through.

Solar Control & Insulation Film

Solar control and insulation film reduces solar glare, summer heat gain and winter heat loss, thus reducing energy costs all year round:

Solar Control Film reflects 83% of the sun’s glare without blocking out the natural light, and rejects up to 80% of solar heat gain, cutting air conditioning costs.
Insulation Film combined with solar control film, retains interior heat in winter, cutting heat loss through glass by up to 30% and reducing heating bills.
Aesthetic Appeal of the exterior of a building is enhanced, giving it a modern look which adds to its elegance and value.

Solar control & insulation film can often be combined with the properties of safety films, security films and bomb blast protection films and privacy film to create a multi-purpose film to meet your specific requirements.

Solar Control Film

Solar control window film dramatically reduces summer heat build up and so cuts air conditioning costs. It also greatly reduces the sun’s glare without blocking out the view or the natural light. Solar glare can be a problem not only in summer, but in winter too, due to ‘low winter sun’. Plus, solar control film can have a significant impact on productivity too. In more detail:

Summer heat - Solar control film (also known as heat reduction film) assists in the meeting of Regulation 7 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 which requires that premises must be kept at optimal thermal comfort levels.
Solar glare - Solar control film (also known as anti glare film) assists in meeting Health & Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 (regarding natural light causing excessive glare) by reducing eye strain, headaches and fatigue caused by the sun’s glare and improving viewing conditions for computer users.
Productivity - Solar glare and summer heat gain also adversely affect both concentration and productivity. A research study undertaken by Wyon in the USA shows that productivity drops by a massive 40% when the temperature rises from 68°F (the temperature at which productivity is at its highest) by just 7°F to 75°F.

Reduces Heat and Solar Glare

The benefits described above apply to offices with external window areas and to factories with glass or polycarbonate roof lights. In both cases, heat reduction/ anti glare film delivers dramatic reductions in internal day time temperatures and solar glare. This is particularly important when you consider that 8 out of the last 10 years have been the hottest ever recorded in Britain!

Insulation Film

Studies have shown that solar control window film can pay for itself in less than 5 years in terms of the energy savings on air-conditioning costs alone. But you can also reduce your heating bills by combining both solar control and insulation properties in the same window film.

Just as glass allows solar heat to radiate through it in summer, it also allows interior heat to escape through it in winter. However, low emissivity solar control film also provides insulation benefits, reflecting back up to 30% of the heat which would normally be lost in winter.

This means that the addition of low emissivity solar control film to single glazed windows can retain as much heat as double glazed windows. Hence buildings fitted with these technically advanced solar insulation films benefit from dramatic savings in air conditioning energy costs in the summer and heating energy costs in the winter.

Aesthetic Appeal

Solar control window films are available in a wide range of different colours and shades, to compliment different building styles and aesthetic requirements. It’s surprising how the exterior of a modern building can be transformed into a striking example of attractive, hi-tech architecture by installing tinted or reflective film.

In summary, the quick and clean installation of solar control and insulation film:

Reduces solar heat gain
Reduces solar glare
Reduces UV fading
Reduces energy costs
Improves visual aesthetics
